Review: The Evil Dead
M and I went to Blockbusters on Sunday to rent a Zombie movie. We were walking around the place, trying in vain to find the Horror section. While we were walking, this one guy must have ripped a nasty one or something rancid because we couldn't stay in that one corner of the store. Later, M passed him, and it must have been emenating from him because it stank like no one's business.
We eventually asked the guy where the Horror section was and it was right in the spot where we didn't look yet. It's not exactly hard to miss because it's low and only 3 columns wide.
We eventually decided on Evil Dead.
I had heard different things about this film. The guy at Blockbusters made it seem like it was a campy movie, so I was expecting a high level of cheese. Instead, what I got was some good cinematography, good make up, and some definate jump scenes.
It wasn't particularly scary, at least not in any way that scared me, but the level of tension was pretty good. There were also good sections of comedy thrown in to lighten things up. Not to the point of Army of Darkness but still funny.
Granted, there were scenes, particularly towards the end that seemed really campy and the effects were pretty poor, but it's forgiveable considering the budget and the time when the film was made.
If you like horror flicks, you most likely have already seen this. If you even have an inkling of getting into the genre, this is a must see for no other reason than for being a classic.
I give it 4/5.
