Kaki King
Last night, as the remnants of Jeanne ripped through the tri-state area, M and I went to the Knitting Factory to see Kaki King. Kaki is this indie rock chick that M found from somewhere. She plays solo-guitar and manages to add in a bass line, a drum line, and simulates multiple guitars all by herself.
Just listening to the music is one thing, but seeing it performed is another experience altogether. By taking on so many roles, her music has a sort of simplicity to it. The tones and the sounds that are generated aren't exactly complex, but the music is. There's layers upong layers of harmonies and harmonics built on top of each other. Now, I don't have any experience in music theory, but I know enough to know what complex music is, and this definately is.
It was a great time, despite the asymetrical rain, wind, and soaked pants.
New CD is out Oct. 5th.
