why its xangay, not xanga
just like everything else out there, pc's vs mac's, q3 vs ut, britney vs christina, there are always rivalries. there are always biases and reason for choosing a specific side in the rivalry. but rarely are the "facts" laid down and a difinitive answer is evident.
pc's vs mac used to be a simple argument, pc's were better, hands down. mostly because of mac os9. but w/ osX, things changed and mac's were, once again, competitive.
the latest rivarly, at least among "us", is blogger and xanga.
originally, i thought it was all a matter of preference. blogger had some advantages such as subdomain's, ie: MySubDomain.blogspot.com, which you could have an unlimitted amount of. xanga only provided you w/ the single user account and a page for that account.
xanga did offer more of a "community", considering that "everybody" is on it. but aside from the popularity, it really isn't the better system.
the decision was clinched when i signed up for xanga last night. blogger provides you w/ an interface to make posts which is independent of your site. you can make edits to your template and all your posts w/o ever actually loading your page. why is this important? since i didn't want to post twice, once in blogger and once in xanga, i added a javascript redirect to the xanga site to this page. now, if i try to edit the page in anyway from the xanga interface, it will automatically redirect me to my blogger site. even if i just want to change something in my xanga profile, it will redirect me right away. this is just a terrible ui.
from the xangas that i have seen, it seems like they force you into a pretty specific mold in terms of look and feel. although all these kids add their random javascript and stolen code, they always have those gay boxes on the right edge.
granted, there are some good aspects to xanga, such as a blogring, but you can add that to any site yourself.
site updates
if you haven't noticed, i added some new things to the site itself. i changed the archiving so it has a drop down box instead of a long list of dates. this makes it a little easier to browse the archives, as well as makes the page neater.
i've also added the ability to comment. the one that i originally found closed registration, so i went w/ the current one.
in the next few days, i'll probably be fooling around w/ the colors. i like the orange right now, but red is more my color.
