Review: Sin City
Went to see Sin City this weekend, and I really wanted to like it. But there were a few things holding the movie back.
Pacing -- There were points where the narration just bogged down the story too much. It's a movie, so you can show a lot of things that you can't in print media. Some of the internal monologue could be better replaced w/ action or something else.
The stories -- I understand the reason why Rodriguez chose to depict three stories instead of 1, but I think the movie would be better served if he had chosen to entertwine them more. So all three stories were happening simultatnesously. This way, there is a hard climax and consistent rising and falling action.
Stylistically, the movie was beautiful. It wasn't just black and white, it was high contrast b&w. I almost wanted him to use a little more color, but it might have lessened its impact. I think the colors that were used could have been a lot more vibrant as to stand out against the stark canvas.
In the end, I'm glad I saw it. I don't know if I would want to see it again though.
