review: rent

This was my first time seeing Rent. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about theatre or Broadway. Nor will I pretend to know what's "good". But I will do my best to provide some sort of review.

I had shut off my brain already, mainly from the food coma induced by the food. I tried reading the playbill, but found that the words just weren't registering in my mind. I would read a sentence and not comprehend a single word of it. The only thing I understood was this visual map of the different relationships in the show.

Before the show started, I decided I would dislike the Mark character. There wasn't any particular reason for this, other than th fact that I didn't like his "look". Did it matter that the picture in the playbill was of a different actor? Not really. It turns out that Mark really was a jerk. So I didn't feel so bad about choosing to dislike him.

The show was a lot of fun. It had some really great musical numbers. I still can't get used to the fact that they sing everything. It didn't help that my mind was shut off so I didn't really understand what was going on. I knew the genearl gist of the story, but the pariculars and the specifics were lost on me.

I think if I understood it better, I probably would have enjoyed it more. There were a few really funny parts where I just couldn't stop laughing. There were other parts that were really serious and kind of sad.

Needless to say, I had a good time. I can't really pinpoint exactly what was fun about it, again, because of my lack of culture. But I know that I enjoyed it.
