Target Audience

I was reading /. and came across this comment pointing to this interview.
We don't make movies for kids. We make movies for adults, actually ourselves, and then just make sure there's nothing in them that the little ones shouldn't see. The local cineplex is littered with movies made by studios who want to second-guess what the audience wants. We find we get better results by making what we want, and then assuming that there are other people like us out there.
This is generally the philosophy that I use when it comes to writing. Sure, I'm writing within the confines of a church. But I have the understanding that not everything I write will be performed. I write in the hopes that they will be performed if I'm lucky. I just can't bring myself to write something that I wouldn't want to see myself. If I don't find it interesting, why would anyone else?
