review: hellboy

I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to see Hellboy. The reviews for it were pretty decint, so I wasn't expecting anything terrible. At the same time, I wasn't expecting anything spectacular either. And yet, I was still a bit disappointed.

There were parts of the film that were really good, but it just felt like the whole thing dragged. There wasn't enough action or comedy to make the wait worth it. There was one scene where Hellboy follows Liz and the other kid while they're on a "date". It's a really funny scene that shows a different side to Hellboy.

Most of the special effects aren't amazing. You can tell that they spent most of their money on Hellboy's costume, which looks amazing. Most of the special effects aren't that important, so it's okay.

The acting is nothing to sing home about. Ron Perlman as Hellboy is dead on. If it wasn't for him, the film would have been terrible. But he gives the character this very strong cockiness that carries the rest of the film. There are points where he is able to show Hellboy's vulnerability and softness.

The action was alrite. There was nothing that spectacular about it. If anything, there needed more. It needed to be more over the top, and it needed to be more banging and stuff being pummeled.

There's not much else to say about the film. If you really have nothing else to do, check it out. If you love comic books or films based on comic books, check it out. Everyone else can pretty much wait for video. This is one of those things that you want to watch at home with a good group of buddies.

2/5.
